The Association of Medical Insurers and Intermediaries (amii) has announced two new appointments to its Executive Committee, including Lucy Pearce, Commercial Director at Brown & Brown Health and Employee Benefits, and Anders Lewis, Corporate Consulting Team Lead at Gallagher.

Following the departure of long-serving members Claire Ginnelly, a freelance Health and Wellbeing Professional, Guy Jones, Director at Berwick Devoil Healthcare Limited, and Alan Mulligan, Client Director at Partners&, Lucy and Anders have joined amii’s Executive Committee to support amii’s mission in promoting excellence and best practices across the healthcare insurance sector.

The committee, which comprises experienced leaders with diverse expertise across the healthcare industry, plays an important role in setting amii’s strategic direction, developing member services, and driving industry-wide initiatives to enhance healthcare provision across the UK.

Lucy brings nearly two decades of industry experience to the committee. Having joined advo in 2020 as a Board Director, she now serves as Commercial Director at Brown & Brown Health and Employee Benefits following their acquisition of advo group in July 2024. In her role, she oversees insurer negotiations, AR management, and strategic cross-referral programs between General Insurance and Health and Employee Benefits.

Anders, who brings over 20 years of expertise to the committee, began his career in 2001 at United Medical Services Ltd, where he led the SME and Retail teams. Through various roles at major firms including Oval Group, Gallagher, Benefex, and Brunel Employee Benefits, he developed extensive experience in both SME and corporate healthcare. Now back at Gallagher, he leads a diverse team managing Corporate Healthcare, Risk, Pensions, and Technology.

Dave Middleton, executive chair of amii, said: “I want to thank Claire, Guy and Alan for the tremendous impact they’ve had on amii throughout their time with us. They’ve helped shape who we are today, and their contributions to our strategic initiatives and member services have been outstanding.

“I am thrilled to have Lucy and Anders joining our Executive Committee, whose combined 40+ years of industry expertise will no doubt be extremely useful as we continue to support our members and advance the healthcare insurance sector.”

We welcome the news that patients will soon be able to use the NHS app to opt for private hospital treatment.

The push to reduce waiting times relies on more patients opting to use private healthcare, so the move is aimed at making life as easy as possible for those considering a private alternative for their routine treatment.

amii hopes that the news will help private healthcare providers play their part in reducing the NHS waiting list, utilising the capacity in the sector and supporting a healthier population.

Our executive chairman Dave Middleton said: “It is pleasing to see steps being taken to support further collaboration between the NHS and the private sector.

“At a time when the NHS is under unrelenting pressure, the government has recognised that making the process easier for patients who are open to private healthcare is a key factor in reducing waiting times for routine treatment.

“I’m looking forward to seeing further details of how it will work in practice for our members.”

The Baton of Hope UK is an initiative aimed at raising awareness and providing support to individuals who may be struggling with their mental health and at risk of suicide.

In June 2023, a specially designed Baton of Hope will set off from Glasgow on a journey through towns and cities across the UK, reaching Downing Street two weeks later.

The aim is to impact the lives of thousands across the country with a simple message: Where there is HOPE, there is a real opportunity to save lives.

This is the promise that #BatonOfHopeUK founders, Mike McCarthy and Steve Phillip, made to their lost sons (Ross and Jordan), and to the thousands of sons and daughters who are lost each year. Carried by notable personalities, leaders, and people with their own inspiring stories of hope, the Baton of Hope will be marked by a packed events schedule giving local communities, organisations, and neighbouring towns a chance to get involved.

They hope that the Baton inspires people, they hope that it unites people, they hope to use it to shine a light on other suicide prevention charities. This is not just a symbol for them, they believe this is a symbol for everyone.

Mike McCarthy, Co-founder of Baton of Hope and speaker at our 2022 AGM, says: “I don’t want sympathy, I want change.” Please watch & listen to their story by clicking here and then on the image within the post.

We are so very disappointed at not to hear of any tax breaks for Private Medical Insurance (PMI) in yesterdays Budget.

£400m of funding to increase the availability of mental health and musculoskeletal resources and expand the Individual Placement and Support scheme was included in the Budget, but no tax reliefs called for by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and backed by AMII, such as a cut in Insurance Premium Tax, were announced. The Chancellor also pressed ahead with plans to increase Corporation Tax from 18 to 25 per cent.

AMII argues that tax relief would encourage the uptake of health cover, support a healthier population and incentivise employers to look after employee health, ultimately helping more people remain in work.

AMII executive chairman Dave Middleton said: “It is disappointing that the Chancellor has simultaneously raised Corporation Tax while refraining from introducing tax relief for the PMI industry.

“At a time when the NHS is under unrelenting pressure, doctors and nurses are striking over pay and conditions and the backlog following the pandemic shows no signs of reducing, the government has missed the chance to take positive steps to encourage growth in the PMI market.

“While we welcome the £400m of funding for mental health and musculoskeletal support, I would urge the Chancellor to go further and review the announcements made in the Budget to offer some much-needed respite for the private health and wellbeing sector.”
